This report [is]… a follow up to SAMFU’s …2005 report “Firestone: the Mark of Modern Slavery” …[The report shows that while] Firestone…has made some changes to address some of the problems...some of these changes fall far short of the…reforms…needed to improve the living and working conditions of employees… Investigations…established that there is a presence on the Firestone concession area, of…militia forces…[which] are allegedly harassing and torturing community members in the name of curbing illicit tapping… It has also been claimed that members of the [PPD] Task Force [operating at Firestone] are responsible for the death of one community member… [The] report also examines…the provision of basic social services including health and education for Firestone’s employees and their families...[and] trade union issues.
