“5 Chinese mining companies violate human rights in Peru” – 8th November 2018

The United Nations (UN) has just released a report that concludes that four companies of Chinese capital with presence in the country, violate the human rights of the population in Peru. It is about the companies Las Bambas (part of MMG, part of China Minmetals) in Apurímac, Shougang in Ica, Chinalco in Junín and Río Blanco Cooper (part of Xiamen Zijin Tongguan Investment Development Corporation, part of Zijin Mining Group, Tongling Non-Ferrous Metals Group Holding Co. Ltd. y Xiamen C&D Coperation Ltd) in Piura, signalled by the report of the Chinese Financial Investments, Human Rights and Environmental Collective (CICDHA), as the authors of abuses perpetrated against communities inside the country.  In the district of Challhuahuacho of Apurímac, The Mixed Provincial Public Prosecutor is investigating 19 leaders who participated in a protest against Las Bambas mining project.  For discrepancy with a substantial modification of the Environmental Impact Study of the mine, the Public Prosecutor has demanded 17 years of prison.  In Ica, the company Shougang Iron Peru, property of the Chinese State company Shougang Group, has been involved in conflicts for years with its workers over poor working conditions and salaries.  Shougang Iron Peru has been confronted with 16 strikes in 26 years.  In Piura, the mining project Río Blanco, owned by Chinese consortium Zijin, had a dark beginning.  The rural communities from the province of San Ignacio (Cajamarca) reported the takeover of lands where they used to undertake agrarian activities.
