[Unofficial Korean-to-English translation provided by Business & Human Rights Resource Centre]

"Legislating Corporate Human Rights and Environmental Due Diligence...Representative Jung Tae-ho proposes 'Act on Human Rights and Environmental Protection for Sustainable Business Management'," September 1, 2023

[...] Democratic Party lawmaker Jung Tae-ho held a press conference at the National Assembly Communication Center [...] on September 1, saying, "I am proposing an 'Act on Human Rights and Environmental Protection for Sustainable Business Management,' which mandates corporate human rights and environmental due diligence and specifies the responsibility of companies to respect human rights and the environment in their global supply chains."

[...] "Preventing human rights violations and environmental destruction by companies is one of the biggest topics of our time, and the international community is also emphasizing the 'corporate responsibility to respect human rights," said Rep. Jung. "The impact on human rights by companies can be solved through continuous assessment and monitoring, communication with stakeholders, mitigation of human rights impacts, and transparent disclosure of such information."

[...] "As a significant player in transnational economic activities, Korean companies should be able to take the lead in responding to human rights and environmental risks arising from their global supply chains in line with the international community," Jung said, adding that the law should serve as a wake-up call for Korean companies to examine themselves for human rights and environmental violations.
