S. Korea: Labour union criticises shipyards for lack of safety measures as explosion caused latest death; companies did not respond
Metal Workers Union alleged that in 2024, South Korean shipyards have witnessed more fatal industrial accidents than previous years. At Daesun Shipbuilding & Engineering, a gas leak caused an explosion, killing a Vietnamese and a South Korean worker. A subcontract worker died while diving at HD Hyundai Samho shipyard. Kumgang Heavy Industries had two workers, including a Cambodian migrant, crushed by a collapsing ship structure. At Hyundai Heavy Industries, a collapsing offshore structure resulted in one death. Labor unions are calling for stronger oversight by the government and punishment of employers for the fatal accidents in the shipbuilding industry.
Business & Human Rights Resource Centre requested responses from Daesun Shipbuilding & Engineering, HD Hyundai Samho, and Hyundai Heavy Industries; they did not respond. We were unable to locate contact information for Kumgang Heavy Industries.
