Samsung's response to worker protest for unionization rights, higher wages, and improved working conditions

Samsung’s statement on strike at factory in Chennai (India)

Samsung Electronics recognizes the right of its employees to form and join trade unions of their own choosing, to bargain collectively, and to engage in peaceful assembly, as well as the right to refrain from such activities, as guaranteed by international standards and local laws.

The alleged acts of oppression and violence against workers affiliated with the Centre of Indian Trade Union at Samsung’s factory in Chennai portrayed in several media outlets are unfounded and misleading.

First, the striking workers in question failed to follow due local procedure, which in turned called for intervention by the local authorities and initiated the process of conciliation. Samsung cooperated with the local authorities and maintained a position of dialogue with the striking workers. During the conciliation period, the workers supported by the Centre of Indian Trade Union took unilateral actions against the High Court order, and therefore the company requested a temporary injunction to protect its production capacity and ensure business continuity.

Moreover, as part of Samsung’s obligation as an employer to provide advance notice to employees on employment matters, the company issued a notice to the striking workers regarding reasons for absence from work which called for their immediate attention.

Finally, Samsung did not take part in acts of physical violence (e.g., detention) against the striking workers, as falsely accused.

Contrary to the allegations, Samsung sought constructive ways to resolve the situation by maintaining a position of dialogue with the striking workers and cooperation with the local authorities. As a result, the parties respectively consented to terms to discontinue the strike and the workers returned to work.

Samsung will continue to respect the freedom of association of our employees and support the non-violent and lawful exercise of those rights. Samsung is open to dialogues with worker representations with regard to improving employment and working conditions.
