Silvia Reséndiz is an environmental activist from Mexicali in the north of Mexico. She is the director of Women Earth (Mujeres Tierra). She and others work to defend their water sources and campaign for the closing of the American company Constellations Brands' plant in their territory due to its supposed negative environmental impacts. She was detained arbitrarily with her grandchildren on 29th June 2019 as they crossed the border into California and claims she was not given food or water and no information of her state was given to family members or press. The Mexican authorities had issued an arrest warrant for her which provoked her detention. They were released after more than 24 hours in detention. Her son, León Fierro who is a member of the organisation Mexicali Resists (Mexicali Resiste), claims that the detention was politically motivated, highlighting the speed at which activists are arrested and charged in the state and crossing the border, compared to authorities involved in corruption cases.
