Did a "Chinese company" forcefully acquire land for mining activities?

Quick Facts

  • The eviction of Binga villagers is not done by a Chinese company. The "Chinese company" mentioned in the report (i.e. Monaf Investments) is in fact a subsidiary of the British company Cantango Holdings Plc.
  • Cantango does have business dealings with Chinese companies in terms of coal production, but no formal offtake agreement has been concluded.
  • Local media speculated that the Chinese companies working with Cantango are "Afrochine Smelting" and "Dinson Holdings." However, there is no evidence that the two companies have had coal exploration activities and mining plans in the Muchesu district.
