Qatar: HRW calls on FIFA to investigate wage abuse alleging World Cup contractor Bin Omran Trading and Contracting has failed to pay workers for up to 5 months
Wage abuse is one of the most common forms of abuse against migrant workers in the Gulf, and a new Human Rights Watch (HRW) investigation alleges one of latest incidents of wage abuse against migrant workers has been carried out by Bin Omran Trading and Contracting which has multi-million USD World Cup projects in its portfolio. The report alleges it has failed to pay its workers' wages for up to five months.
HRW's interviews with workers at Bin Omran revealed that beyond non-payment, their attempts to protest the situation to several government bodies fell on deaf ears. Furthermore, evidence revealed that Bin Omran threatened workers to "keep working, despite the delayed and unpaid salaries, or to face further wage deductions" in an incident that HRW states indicates forced labour.
Bin Omran Trading & Contracting was invited to respond to the allegations by the Resource Centre in March 2022. The company did not respond.
