Singapore: Deaths & injuries among VSL employees on Ssangyong E&C worksite; companies did not respond
In September 2024, Asia One reported on the deaths and injuries of four workers at a construction site in Singapore after they were struck by heavy machinery. The workers, who were reportedly employed by VSL's local subsidiary, included a migrant worker from Bangladesh. The Ministry of Manpower stated “heavy machinery or structures must be secured in a stable manner to reduce the risk of slipping or toppling”. The outlet names Ssangyong Engineering & Construction as the main contractor of the worksite.
Business & Human Rights Resource Centre invited Ssangyong Engineering and Construction, as the main contractor of the worksite, to respond to the report and to outline how it ensures safety standards for subcontracted workers are upheld as well as what measures the company has taken to ensure remedy for the injured subcontracted workers and for the families of the deceased subcontracted workers.
