Barrick Gold response to the report "No More Violence: Unmasking Canada at the UN Universal Periodic Review"

...Barrick refutes these reports, which merely recycle unsubstantiated claims that Barrick has addressed and debunked on numerous occasions. Our comprehensive responses have been made public, and various of those documents are already available on the Business and Human Rights Resource Centre website. We have also attempted to engage and share the correct information and data with the abovementioned organizations, but those attempts have been to no avail. To avoid duplication in response, existing publicly available information that deals with and responds to the repeated unsubstantiated allegations is listed below.

The response is available on our website: https://s25.q4cdn.com/322814910/files/doc_news/2023/01/Barrick_UNHRC_Response_15112022.pdf. We continue to make all of our extensive water monitoring data (which is independently analyzed) available to all the competent authorities in Argentina. We also undertake participatory monitoring with the community...

Pueblo Viejo Mine, Sanchez Ramirez, Dominican Republic: We have provided detailed information regarding the unfounded claims of water contamination in letters addressed directly to the co-contributors...Barrick wholly rejects any claim that it ‘violates’ the regulations of the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM). To the contrary, Barrick published its conformance to the GISTM, including the El Llagal TSF at Pueblo Viejo, within the industry-committed disclosure date of 5 August 2023...

Pascua Lama Project, Chile and Argentina: Pascua Lama is not an operational mine, nor has it ever been. Construction activities were halted in 2013. Barrick responded to the Chile Environmental Court decisions here: https://s25.q4cdn.com/322814910/files/doc_news/2020/09/Barrick-Accepts-Environmental-CourtRuling.pdf Please...As part of closure planning, Barrick has completed a comprehensive review of the existing social and environmental obligations to ensure relevant commitments are addressed with local authorities and the community...
