Doctoral Researchers’ Call to Support the CSDDD

As doctoral researchers of the International Doctorate Programme on Business and Human Rights at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg in Germany, we urge all EU member state governments to vote in favor of the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD). We are alarmed by the news of the intended abstention or even opposition of certain Member States, with a particular emphasis on that of the German government.

The proposed Directive establishes a framework for companies to conduct due diligence, identify risks and address human rights violations within their value chains. The obligations promote a more transparent and diligent conduct of companies, while establishing a level-playing field across EU Member States.

This enables companies to uphold the shared values of the European Union and act as agents of change both within and beyond the EU’s borders. Supporting this Directive contributes to a future where businesses operate responsibly and prioritize human rights, guided by respect for human dignity while striving for global prosperity. We invite all hesitant delegates to engage in a dialogue with members of our programme to share perspectives and create a mutual understanding of the nuanced considerations surrounding corporate due diligence for human rights and sustainability. Your reconsideration and support can contribute to creating a business environment that overcomes both past and ongoing injustices. Thank you for your time and consideration.
