Indonesia: JATAM report finds IWIP nickel mining operations resulted to adverse social & ecological impacts

The Jaring Advokasi Tambang Mining Advocacy Network (JATAM) released a report alleging that the nickel mining operations in Indonesia Weda Bay Industrial Park (IWIP), an industrial in North Maluku, Indonesia has resulted to “disappearing food reserves and water sources, deforestation, the diminishing biodiversity, the widespread pollution smearing water, air, and sea, as well as continuing social conflicts”.

The report cited various companies, some of which have been invited by the Resource Centre to respond to similar allegations (links to company dashboards are provided to access past company responses or non-responses), thus their responses were no longer sought. The entities named in the report are nickel mining companies (PT Weda Bay Nickel, PT Mega Haltim Mineral, PT Cetara Bangun Persada, PT Halmahera Sukses Mineral, PT Wana Halmahera Barat Permai, PT First Pacific Mining, PT Harum Sukses Mining, PT Bakti Pertiwi Nusantara and PT Honglu); smelters (PT Indonesia Weda Bay Industrial Park, PT Megah Surya Pertiwi, PT Wanatiara Persada, PT Aneka Tambang, PT Fajar Bhakti Lintas Nusantara, PT Tekindo Energi and PT Halmahera Persada Lygend); IWIP participants (Tsingshan, Huayou, CATL dan Zhenshi, Delong Nickel, Wanxiang Group, Eramet) and affiliated companies (Zhenshi Group, BASF, POSCO, CNGR Advanced Material Co. Ltd., Strive Investments, YIEH Corp., EVE Energy, Lindo Investment Pte. Ltd. and Nickel Industries).

The Resource Centre invited the following companies to respond: PT Cetara Bangun Persada, PT Bakti Pertiwi Nusantara, PT Honglu, PT Megah Surya Pertiwi, PT Wanatiara Persada, PT Fajar Bhakti Lintas Nusantara (through its parent company Zhenshi Holding Group, Ltd.), PT Tekindo Energi and Wanxiang Group. None of the companies responded.

The Resource Centre was unable to send invitations to respond to the following companies due to lack of contacts: PT Wana Halmahera Barat Permai, PT Harum Sukses Mining and PT Position.

For its part, Yieh Phui Enterprise in a statement said that it has no investments or operations in Indonesia's IMIP and IWIP nickel industrial parks. The statement is linked below.
