"Agricultural Exploitation Uncovered in Casal di Principe,"
As part of an investigation directed by the Prosecutor's Office of Napoli Nord, the Carabinieri from the Labor Inspectorate Unit of Caserta executed an ordinance issued by the judge for preliminary investigations of the Napoli Nord Court... the investigation, also conducted through inspections at the agricultural company and the questioning of migrant workers, revealed the subjection of multiple foreign workers to exploitative conditions, taking advantage of their state of need. The workers received compensation that was inconsistent with that provided by national and territorial collective agreements and was, in any case, absolutely disproportionate to the quality and quantity of work employed... Specifically, according to the investigation's findings, [workers] received meager and sporadic wages, were forced to work 10-11 hours a day, without weekly rest or holidays. The workers, moreover, had to provide for themselves and their families in their countries of origin with their scarce resources. Some of them were found to be living or had lived within the inspected agricultural company in a dilapidated container, lacking electricity and running water. The agricultural laborers, after the intervention of the authorities, were placed in protection to safeguard their dignity and individual freedom.
