DRC: Two NGOs sue oil company Perenco for its polluting activities

On the 9th of November 2022, "Disclose" revealed information accusing Perenco, the second oil company in France, of damaging the environment in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Old pipelines crossing rivers and poor maintenance of oil installations are resulting in frequent spills of crude oil into the environment. Illegal gas flairing conducted by the company is releasing large amounts of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere and is affecting the climate. Finally, incineration and landfill of oil waste are also damaging the environment.

Scientific studies, as well as investigations by local and international NGOs and a report from the Congolese Senate inquiry committee reveal chronic water, air, and soil pollution.

Following these revelations, the NGOs Sherpa and Les Amis de la Terre France have taken legal action against the company Perenco S.A. This legal action is the result of several years of investigation to try to clear up the opacity of the group and establish the links between Perenco and its numerous companies operating abroad. The french company Perenco, when interrogated about the damages resulting from its activities abroad, indeed denies any control over the other companies of the group.

Perenco claims that it is committed to ensuring the health and safety of its employees and of the communities, and that it is developing an environmental approach to control and mitigate the impact of its activities. The oil company also emphasizes its social, environmental, and economic actions deployed abroad. It does admit that incidents have happened in the past, but they are said to be marginal and localized.
