Mandatory Human Rights Due Diligence: Developments in Luxembourg
In March 2018, civil society organisations launched a public campaign, the "Initiative pour un devoir de vigilance au Luxembourg", calling for mandatory human rights and environmental due diligence legislation in Luxembourg.
As a result of public pressure, the December 2018 coalition agreement (2018-2023) was signed. Luxembourg's government committed to exploring the possibility of legislating on due diligence at the national level, while also expressing support for a binding EU law, and welcoming the ongoing process at UN level to develop a legally binding instrument on business and human rights.
In February 2021, a group of 32 Luxembourg businesses signed a letter further urging the government to introduce human rights due diligence legislation.
