Myanmar: Taiwanese sculpture factory Wise Unicorn allegedly sought military intervention against workers striking over wages; incl. co. non-response
A labour dispute at Wise Unicorn Industrial Ltd.'s factory in Myanmar escalated from protests over wages and unpaid bonuses to allegations of military intervention against striking workers. Workers report that after 350 employees launched a strike in November 2024, the company brought in military personnel to threaten strikers.
In December 2024, Business & Human Rights Resource Centre invited Wise Unicorn to respond. The company did not.
On December 30th, civil society organizations in Taiwan staged protests at the company's office over alleged labour rights violations. Following protests, Wise Unicorn issued a statement defending its position, noting it had already raised daily wages from 6,800 to 7,800 Myanmar Kyat in July 2024 and rejected workers' new demands for 9,000 Kyat as 'unreasonable.' The company's representative stated they only sought help from labour authorities and police, not military forces.
