Papua New Guinea: MiningWatch Canada raises concern with OHCHR on Porgera mine remedy

MiningWatch Canada has written to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, raising concerns regarding the review of the remedy mechanism for victims of sexual violence at the Porgera mine, in Papua New Guinea. The Porgera mine is operated by Barrick Gold. MiningWatch Canada states that the review commissioned by Barrick Gold is neither independent, inclusive, nor transparent. In its response to MiningWatch Canada, Barrick Gold states that it believes the criticism of MiningWatch Canada "mischaracterizes the actual process and the spirit of the review." Enodo Rights, the company that conducted the review of the mechanism states in its letter that it "[has done everything in [its] power to ensure that it will not be found wanting for failures of process."
