Peru: 30-day truce results in working group between the six protesting communities and MMG to monitor progress on commitments

...We reported last week on the 30-day truce facilitated by the Council of Ministers which brought together the company, MMG, and the protesting groups at Las Bambas in Apurímac region. The truce has allowed a temporary working group to be set up, tasked to follow and check up on the planned negotiations...

...The halt in operations at Las Bambas is now amounting to more than 50 days, the longest in the mine’s history.

The six communities that have been holding out against the Chinese company MMG have agreed to join the working group. It is being promoted and managed by the Presidency of the Council of Ministers (PCM), and includes a company representative, one from the Defensoria del Pueblo, and a number from the ministries most closely involved.

According to Ministerial Resolution 182-2022-PCM, the committee’s task is to establish schedules and to monitor progress on commitments made by each of the parties.

Significant among these commitments is the agreement by Huancuire community to withdraw from its physical occupation of property belonging to the mine. MMG has agreed to “evaluate and restructure” its personnel in charge of the negotiations...
