Angola: Election results are disputed by opposition and activists; diplomats & intl. observers allege that elections were fair

After 38 years in power, President José Eduardo dos Santos, of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (Movimento Popular de Libertação de Angola-MPLA), did not run for the general elections on August 23. But everything indicates that João Lourenço, MPLA candidate supported by the president, will be his successor. These were the fourth elections since independence in 1975 and the first in which President José Eduardo dos Santos is not a candidate.

Elections were considered "free, fair and credible" by diplomats and international observers but the opposition disagrees. Activists comment and many also contest the results.
