ILO’s Brazil office urges the country to distribute land to combat forced labour, following landmark ruling by the Inter-American Court on Human Rights (IACHR). The decision holds the government responsible for providing compensation to 125 slaves held at the Fazenda Brasil Verde, Pará state, Brazil.

This is the first time IACHR held a state accountable for forced labour. The Brazil Verde Estate vs. Brazil case was brought before the Court by the Center for Justice and International Law (CEJIL ) and the Land Pastoral Commission (CPT). According to the organizations, the case is about slave labour and human trafficking and took place in the Brazil Verde Estate, in the state of Pará, Brazil.
