BSR highlights human rights impacts for power & utilities companies & implications of renewable energy transition

BSR released an issue brief detailing 10 human rights impacts for businesses operating in the power and utilities sector, as well as opportunities for positive impact. The issues identified include impacts on local communities during land acquisition when they are not adequately consulted or compensated; risks of losing livelihoods when community members need to migrate or their environments are negatively affected by industrial pollution; and a decline in collective bargaining and the effectiveness of workers’ councils or representatives due to outsourcing practices, among others. BSR also highlights the human rights implications of the transition to renewable energy and invites companies involved to integrate human rights into their business practices.
