Cambodia: Factory workers in Svay Rieng province protest against maltreatment; return to work after factory promised to adhere to proposals

"Protesting workers return to factory floor," 15 November 2017

Nearly 5,000 employees of the You Li International factory in Svay Rieng province’s Bavet town…returned to work after protesting for better working conditions….

Staff were unhappy since the firm recently began treating workers more harshly.

“If the workers were late, the company would put them in separate place in a cage….”

Staff also called on the company to stop discriminating against pregnant workers, cease using one-month contracts, pay wages on time and in full, and treat employees with respect.

…Deputy chief of the labour department in Svay Rieng, said his officials went to negotiate with the factory after staff began their protests.

“We suggested to the workers that they return to the factory,” he said. “The factory has agreed to adhere to their proposals.”
