Cambodia: Prime Minister sues opposition leaders for suggesting govt. involvement in critic Kem Ley's killing; witnesses & supporters face threats, go into hiding

On 10 July, political analyst Kem Ley was shot dead in a café in Phnom Penh. Kem Ley is known for being critical of the Cambodian government, especially on issues of governance, corruption, and human rights.

The killing came against a backdrop of heightened political tensions between Prime Minister Hun Sen and the opposition.

Frequently cited in reports on the killing is an interview Kem Ley gave two days prior to his death on the Global Witness report “Hostile Takeover”, which details the business interests of the Prime Minister’s family.

Kem Ley was buried on 24 July amidst an outpouring of public support. His supporters claim to be facing threats, with many going into hiding.

The Prime Minister filed lawsuits against opposition leaders who have hinted at government involvement in the killing.
