European Parliament adopts resolution condemning violence against Guarani-Kaiowá in Brazil & claims that companies should be held accountable for environmental damage and human rights abuses

On 24 November, the European Parliament adopted a resolution condemning violence against Guarani-Kaiowá in Brazil, highlighting that companies should be held accountable for environmental damage and human rights abuses and that “...the EU and the Member States should uphold this as a core principle by making it a binding provision in all trade policies...”. In addition, it urges Brazilian authorities to urgently ‘ “prioritise completion of the demarcation of all territories claimed by the Guarani-Kaiowá’ in order to prevent any more territorial disputes and killings'.”. Besides the reference to several UN Documents and resolutions on indigenous peoples, the current resolution also refers to the 2016 report by the Brazilian organization that works to promote the protection of indigenous rights, Conselho Indigenista Missionário (Indigenous Missionary Council, CIMI).
