Falling sales and farmers’ protest may delay Maruti’s Gujarat plans [India]

Maruti Suzuki's plans to build manufacturing units in Gujarat may take a long time in coming due to slowing car sales and continued farmer agitation against land allocation …. Farmers of these villages…demanding the land back, saying they prefer farming to industrialisation, according to leaders of the agitation. They say the proposed SIR will take away more than half the available land in these villages and they will not be left with enough cultivable land to pursue agriculture and meet fodder requirements for their cattle….Kenichi Ayukawa, managing director and CEO at Maruti Suzuki, told…We have no idea of any protests in Gujarat. The possibility of plants in that state is already few years away.
