Creation of an "Access to remedy fund" in order to improve access to justice for victims of corporate abuse proposed by group of lawyers

" Access to remedy fund proposed - A group of lawyers is proposing a fund to improve access to justice for victims of human rights violations by corporations", 8 Nov 2017

Lawyers... are proposing the creation of an Access to Remedy Fund. It will focus on strengthening the institutions and processes for ensuring access to justice for victims of human rights abuse in which business enterprises play a role. The aim is to solicit funds from private entities and individuals to support specific projects...

...We envisage that most projects will involve professionals, civil society advocates and/or corporations working with groups of claimants or victims who have not been heard... The Fund will attempt to share lessons learned from projects with actors from all three pillars of the UNGPs.

...Our proposal for an Access to Remedy Fund draws inspiration from ‘social venturing’ models... The focus is on innovative schemes.

...To acquire credibility with all stakeholders, a thorough multi-stakeholder process is required to establish the Fund and to identify its specific functions... It is also important to establish rules and safeguards that will guarantee the full independence of the Fund.

...A priority in designing the Fund will be to listen to groups of victims and complainants, including ground level advocates.
