Japanese labour authorities have ruled that a 27 year old Filipino who was working in Japan under the Foreign Trainee Programme died of overwork. His work records show that he had been working from 78.5 to 122 hours of overtime per month before his death from heart failure in 2014. 80 hours overtime is the official “karoshi (death from overwork) line” set by the government. The Foreign Trainee Programme has been criticized heavily by NGOs, UN human rights bodies, and the US State Department as leading to human rights abuses.
