Japan: Olympic authorities admit high risk rain forest timber being used

Over a year after requests from NGOs for the the information, the Tokyo Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games (TOCOG) has published the sources of timber being used for construction of a new stadium for the mega sporting event. According to this information, at least 87 percent of the plywood used for the construction is from Malaysia or Indonesia, and several international NGOs have expressed concern that the ‘overwhelming majority’ of this wood is uncertified, and have stated that ‘Tokyo 2020’s unsustainable use of tropical plywood to construct the Olympic facilities is an extension of “business as usual” practices in Japan and is entirely inconsistent with the Olympic commitment to sustainability.’
