The government published its first ever White Paper on the internationally known phenomenon of “karoushi”, or death from overwork. According to a survey conducted as part of compiling the White Paper, 22.7 percent of companies admitted that some employees log more than 80 hours of overtime a month, the official line above which the government has stated there is danger of death from overwork. Nevertheless, only a combined 200 or so cases of death from overwork and “exhaustion related suicide” are recognised by the government every year.
