Kenya: Tenants' association says landlords discriminate against potential tenants based on ethnicity, race & marital status

“How rogue Nairobi landlords discriminate against tenants based on race, tribe and marital status”

Race, marital and tribal backgrounds are some of the debauched parameters determining who and who not to live in some residential parts of the city.  They have been used to discriminate a huge chunk of tenants despite their ability to afford the set rent.

The Urban Tenants Association of Kenya (Utak) association's secretary general Ephraim Murigo admits the discrimination cases reported by the tenants are alarming. He claims most landlords in Parklands, South C and Westlands rent those from the Asian descent and others are largely unwanted tenants irrespective of their ability to pay and assurance to adhere to set rules…

There are also issues of discrimination on sex and marital status with landlords along Waiyaki Way notorious according to Murigo. "In Uthiru, Kinoo and Kikuyu you find an apartment is rented to unmarried people only and in other cases to the married couple only. In such if you are single they will not open the gates to you past 10pm. And will harass you if you marry while within the singles-only apartment" he says.  He advises that such tenants should not suffer in silence and neither fear to confront the landlords in courts or set tribunals.
