Philippines: JBIC urged to halt support for new LNG terminal in the Philippines following failure to conduct environmental assessment; incl. co. comments

"ガス計画乱立のフィリピン、問われる日本の責任 環境や漁業への悪影響懸念、日本に中止要請も," 19 June 2024

[Unofficial description by Business & Human Rights Resource Centre]

A fishermen's union has called for the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) and Japan's three mega banks to halt support for the construction of an LNG terminal in the Philippines, which could place a significant strain on the lives of local residents and the environment.

The union filed an complaint in December 2023, alleging that the JBIC, which invests in the parent company of the terminal, had failed to conduct environmental assessment.

JBIC told Toyo Keizai, "an investigation is currently being conducted by the examiner in charge of environmental guidelines, and we will re-examine the matter based on the results of that investigation."
