Australia: Gig economy workers may be granted minimum employment standards following changes to law

"Gig economy workers could win minimum employment standards under new laws", 27 August 2024

Food delivery riders and parcel couriers could be granted minimum employment standards for the first time, as changes to employment law come into effect.

Independent contractors, including gig economy drivers and riders for companies such as UberEats, Menulog, DoorDash and Hungry Panda, could receive mandated workplace protections including superannuation, personal injury insurance and a safety net on pay to ensure they recover their costs each week, as the Transport Workers Union (TWU) makes landmark applications to the Fair Work Commission....

The applications to the commission by the TWU will also seek fairer payment terms for those in the transport supply chains, including parcel delivery drivers for companies like Aramex and CouriersPlease.

Over the past 10 years, 1,785 people have been killed in truck crashes and 486 transport workers have died on the job, including 19 transport gig workers.
