"Reza Berati's parents reach settlement with government and G4S security over Manus island riot murder", 14 August 2023

The parents of Iranian asylum seeker Reza Berati, who was beaten to death by guards at Manus Island in 2014, have reached a confidential settlement with the federal government and security firm G4S.

In 2021, the 23-year-old's parents Ita Torab Berati and Farideh Baralak sued G4S and the Australian government for mental harm caused by his murder.

Maurice Blackburn Lawyers, who represented Mrs Baralak and Mr Berati along with the Human Rights Law Centre, said the settlement brought "some justice".

The Department of Home Affairs said it did not comment on confidential legal settlements.
