Bangladesh: Accord signatory brands respond to allegations of failing to complete required safety improvements & calls to extend Accord to ensure garment worker safety
Workers Rights Consortium, Clean Clothes Campaign, Maquila Solidarity Network and Global Labor Justice published a report entitled “Unfinished Businesses: Outstanding safety hazards at garment factories show that the Accord must be extended and expanded” in April 2021. The report identified Accord signatory brands which have allegedly failed to facilitate agreed safety renovations at supplier factories in Bangladesh as required by their obligations under the Bangladesh Accord. Labour rights organisations and unions are calling on Bangladesh Accord signatory brands to extend and expand the Accord beyond its expiration on 31 May 2021 to ensure continued progress on factory safety and brand accountability for the protection of supply chain workers.
The identified brands are: Aldi Nord, Aldi Süd, Bestseller, C&A, H&M, Lidl, Lindex, Loblaw, PVH, Varner Group, WE Fashion and Zeeman. In May 2021, Business & Human Rights Resource Centre invited these brands to respond. Aldi Nord, Aldi Süd, Bestseller, C&A, H&M, Joe Fresh (part of Loblaw Companies), Lidl, Lindex, Varner and Zeeman responded- their responses are included below. PVH and WE Fashion did not respond.
