Brazil: Belo Sun's mining project in Xingu is "unfeasible" and would lead to the "ecogenocide" of indigenous and traditional communities, says Apib

Apib

Through its latest report " Mine of blood - Report on the Belo Sun mining project" , the Articulation of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil (Apib) points out a series of allegations about violations of the rights of traditional communities and indigenous peoples impacted by the company's mining venture in Volta Grande do Xingu, in the state of Pará, including alleged omissions, illegalities and intimidation by Belo Sun.

According to Apib, the "installation of Brazil's largest open-pit gold mine in the heart of the Amazon rainforest is evidently unfeasible", and would cause the removal of more than 800 families from the region. In addition, the report also states that "the mining company did not carry out prior, free and informed consultation with the impacted indigenous communities" and that "it has tried to intimidate and silence discussions about the project".

The BHRRC invited Belo Sun to comment on the allegations. The company's response is available.
