Brazil: X suspended after not complying with Supreme Court order

Agência Brasil - EBC

Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes ordered the suspension of the social network X from Brazil after the company failed to obey an order from the minister to set up a legal representative in the country.

On 17 August, X had announced that it would shut down its operations in Brazil due to what it called ‘censorship orders’ from the minister.

Last April, Moraes opened an inquiry into Elon Musk after he said he would reactivate accounts on the platform that the judge had ordered blocked within an investigation about "digital militias" that have been accused of spreading fake news and hate messages during the government of former far-right President Jair Bolsonaro.

A Panel of the Federal Supreme Court unanimously decided to confirm Moraes' order and to keep the social network X suspended.
