Snapshot: In 2021, communities of Intag valley in Ecuador brought a case against Codelco and ENAMI EP about their joint Lluirmagua copper-molybdenum project with the Provincial Court of Justice of Imbabura, arguing for the rights of nature and that they were not consulted about the project. In March 2023, the Court agreed that communities' Constitutional right to consultation and the rights of nature were violated. It revoked the environmental licence and ordered the suspension of all mining activities. It also ordered ENAMI to submit a new environmental impact assessment and consult with affected communities. In May 2024, the Constitutional Court declined to hear an appeal aimed at resuming operations at the Llurimagua mine. The case is closed.
