Fresh arrests as residents reject Letpadaung mine deal [Myanmar]

Monywa residents have vowed to continue pushing for the release of activist Daw Naw Ohn Hla, who was arrested on August 13 during a protest against the...billion Letpadaung copper mine project. Police arrested 10 women but later released nine after they signed a guarantee to not reoffend...About 300 villagers demonstrated in downtown Monywa, calling for the project to be cancelled, for amendments to the 2008 constitution and for the disbandment of a committee implementing the findings of an investigation commission’s report into the mine project...“We don’t accept any compensation as we totally reject the new contract. We only want to end the project,” said Ko Aung Myint Thein [village resident].” Money cannot guarantee our livelihood. We want to get back our land.
