Snapshot: On 29 July 2022, nine residents of St. Ann filed a constitutional claim against the Jamaican Government for granting a bauxite mining licence to Noranda Jamaica Bauxite Partners, Noranda Jamaica Partners II and New Day Aluminum Ltd in the Jamaican Supreme Court. They argued that the companies' bauxite mining activities negatively impacted their lives, health, livelihoods, and the environment. The court issued an interim injunction to halt mining until the trial. On 20 January 2023, the Supreme Court granted this injunction and ordered the mining project to halt. However, on 9 June 2023, the Court of Appeal ruled that the company could resume mining operations in sections of St. Ann. The case is ongoing.
