Indonesia: Chinese-invested Rempang Eco City Project and relocation controversies

Around 1,000 individuals protested against the displacement caused by the construction of Rempang Eco-City in Indonesia, a project backed by China's Xinyi Group, leading to clashes with police and dozens of arrests.

Despite the government's offer of relocation and compensation, critics argue it fails to consider the cultural and identity loss for the indigenous people. The situation reflects broader conflicts in Indonesia, where economic development is pursued at the expense of indigenous rights and environmental considerations. Xinyi Glass did not respond to the media's request for comments on the protest.

In October 2023, the Business & Human Rights Resource Centre invited Xinyi Glass to respond to the allegations of inadequate spatial planning of the project and the joint statement by civil society organizations. Xinyi Glass did not respond.
