Indonesia: Delong Nickel accused of restricting workers' freedom through 'systematic wage withholding', arbitrary fines and sexual harassment; incl. co. non-response

According to reports from Labor Fact, Delong Indonesia (hereinafter referred to as Delong) is a subsidiary of Jiangsu Delong Nickel Industry Company Ltd. operating in Sulawesi, Indonesia. Since 2019, Delong has allegedly been systematically withholding wages from its Chinese workers, a situation that has not improved over the past five years. Reports suggest that wage withholding is not only economically damaging to workers' incomes but also serves as a means of controlling their freedom.

Based on feedback from workers and information on various recruitment and social media platforms, the salaries claimed by Delong in its external communications do not match the actual wages paid. The company is also accused of false recruitment, poor treatment, frequent fines, and sexual harassment. In addition, a construction worker subcontracted by Delong said that his basic needs, including living conditions, accommodation, food and wages, were not guaranteed. When the worker and his colleagues tried to demand their wages, they were intimidated and threatened by Delong management.

In May 2024, the Business & Human Rights Resource Centre invited Jiangsu Delong to respond to these allegations. It did not.
