Jordan: Concerns over growing stigmatisation and hate speech against migrant population after 600 Bangladeshi workers were tested positive for Covid-19

The health authorities in Jordan has confirmed that 600 migrant workers from Bangladesh were tested positive for Covid-19; all of them are employed in the same garment factory in Zarqa governorate. As a result, hate speech and incitement against Bangladeshi workers in Jordan has spread, demanding that all Bangladeshi workers in Jordan be burned, killed or deported, etc.

Tamkeen Center for Legal Aid has monitored and documented the discriminatory and offensive comments against the workers, and issued a statement condemning the hate speech and discrimination that has spread against them. Tamkeen Director said that the workers may have contracted the virus due to lack of health and occupational safety tools in the factory.

So far, the Jordanian government has not taken any action to hold those responsible for spreading hate and incitement against the affected workers to account.
