Kenya: Residents take Kibos Sugar & Agro Chemicals to court over alleged water & land pollution

Petitioners from Kisumu allege that Kibos Sugar and Agro Chemicals, two companies which employ thousands of local residents, have polluted local areas, caused human suffering and infringed on the right to live in a clean environment. Kibos Sugar is appealing a previous ruling by the lower courts with regards to obtaining a fresh environmental assessment impact license. Agro Chemicals is also appealing in a case which saw two petitioners allege the discharging of raw effluent into the local river and toxic waste dumping has endangered lives. The courts' rulings on these two appeals could culminate in both companies losing their operating licences.
