On 15 October 2023, Honduran human rights defender and member of the Empresa Asociativa Campesina de Isletas (Isletas Associative Farmer Company (EACI)), in Aguán, Kevin Azahel Meza, was killed by the police as the organisation attempted to recuperate their land. In 1990, families belonging to EACI were displaced from their lands by the company Dole PLC. Since then, the lands have been under dispute, despite the fact that the families belonging to EACI are the legitimate owners and should have had their lands returned to them through the Agrarian Reform.

On 29 September 2023, another member of EACI, Oscar Fernando Alonzo Aguilar, was shot and injured by members of the police as the organisation attempted to recuperate their land.
