Kosovo: Miners at Trepca lead-zinc mine end 10-day hunger strike after reaching agreement with co. on timely payments & better working conditions

On the 24th of October 2023, miners dissatisfied with deteriorating working conditions and low wages at the lead, zinc and silver Trepca mine in Kosovo launched a hunger strike. The miners' demands included timely payment of salaries, dismissal of current management, and a guarantee of better working conditions. According to a representative of the Workers' Union of Trepca, the strikers planned not to work until their demands were met.

The management of Trepca mine announced the strike illegal as it was not announced seven days earlier. The union claimed the management had suspended five members of the union as initiators of the strike.

On the 3rd of November, the workers reached an agreement with the company management on more timely salary payments, the recruitment of a new company chief and better working condition. As a result, they called off the ten-day strike.
