Melvin Geovany Mejía Rodríguez was a Tolupán indigenous leader belonging to the La Candelaria tribe and a defender of land rights and indigenous peoples' rights in the face of national and international extractive companies. He was a member of the Movimiento Amplio por la Dignidad y la Justicia (MADJ), an organisation that works to end corruption and protect natural resources and human rights.

Melvin was killed on 22 January 2022 by unknown persons on the road leading from the city of Morazán, department of Yoro. Melvin Geovany was travelling with a friend, who died on the spot, while the defender was seriously injured and died within minutes from gunshot wounds.
