Meta publishes first annual human rights report, falling short of civil society expectations
On 14 July 2022 Meta published its long-awaited first annual human rights report, which according to the company covers its learning and progress from 1 January 2020 to 31 December 2021. The report provides details about the company's approach to managing human rights risks, including details about how it has updated its policies as part of an ongoing effort to take human rights considerations into account. The report also contains summaries related to two human rights impact assessments conducted by independent third parties, the first one related to the human rights impacts on Meta's platforms in the Philippines, and the second in India.
After the publication of Meta's report, digital rights defenders and the media outlets criticised the company for failing to address key human rights concerns around content moderation, hate speech and misinformation.
