Myanmar: Garment workers threatened with arrest over protest; incl. co. response
In August 2024, it was reported that workers at Hang Kei Myanmar are facing a series of violations, including Workplace Coordination Committee (WCC) representatives making disrespectful remarks to workers. When workers decided to coordinate a strike in response to an argument with the WCC, the employer threatened to call the army to arrest the workers, and reportedly continues to threaten to contact the army in response to issues. The relevant labour department went to the factory to resolve the protest, but no solution was found. The workers also reported being denied legal benefits incl. leave such as medical leave when workers are sick, wage cuts if workers take leave, excessive production targets and verbal abuse towards workers to meet the target, mandatory overtime without prior notice, and no medicine available in the factory.
In December 2024, Business & Human Rights Resource Centre invited Etam Group and Hunkermoller to respond. The responses can be found below.
