Response from Newmont to Oxfam's open letter
(Full response attached)
Thank you for the opportunity to respond to Oxfam America’s open letter dated January 10, 2022. Newmont is committed to open and transparent reporting of the Company’s activities, including payments to governments, overall economic contributions, and the economic impact of our value chain in the jurisdictions in which we operate. We firmly believe that transparency is a foundational component of building trust with communities and governments as well as ensuring accountability to our stakeholders. Newmont is routinely ranked as one of the most transparent companies in the S&P 500 (as determined by Bloomberg ESG Disclosure).
We have supported the EITI since 2003 and made recent commitments to both Beneficial Ownership Transparency and Contract Transparency. Separately, our Annual Sustainability Report and our Economic Impact Reports detail payments we make to governments across our sites and regions.
Newmont is an industry advocate for enhanced transparency, including efforts to revise the EITI Expectations for Supporting Companies to accurately assess and measure performance against commitments. We also firmly believe that revisions to the EITI Expectations should be pursued following a robust and transparent multi-stakeholder dialogue and good-faith discussions between all interested parties. We take our commitments seriously and expect to be held accountable for implementing those commitments, regardless of whether we are a Board member or an EITI Supporting Company. Newmont welcomes the EITI Secretariat’s ongoing efforts to build consensus around the EITI Supporting Company Expectations and will continue to actively participate in the discussion. We remain committed to advancing transparency in the extractive industry.
