Snapshot: In 2023, the Public Defenders Office, on behalf of Quilombolas and Indigenous People from 26 communities in Pará filed a lawsuit at the Castanhal Agrarian Court in Brazil. They argued that Norsk Hydro's operations of a pipeline used in the exploration of bauxite exacerbated land conflicts and encroached on Quilombola territories. Additionally, they cited numerous irregularities in the environmental licensing process granted by the state for the mining pipeline, including violations of Indigenous Peoples' rights. Mineração Paragominas declared that "all its activities are duly licenced, in accordance with the law and rules in force". The case is ongoing.
